ECOBILAN has developed a special focus on the Life
Cycle Assessment (LCA) of waste management.
As part of this focus we have addressed waste management issues
in such different industry sectors as automotive, electronics and
consumer products. Furthermore, we have carried out numerous studies
for governmental and private bodies on the viability of different
waste management strategies.
What for?
- Identifying opportunities to increase the eco-efficiency of
a product's end-of-life management
- Compiling user specific databases and tools to facilitate improved
management of waste streams
- Establishing policy options and priorities using a 'life cycle'
approach consistent with ISO 14001 and Providing an independent
and scientifically rigorous appraisal of proposed legislation
- Supporting cost savings through the implementation of improved
systems for the management of material and energy flows
- Responding to a regulation. (e.g. : Anticipating the requirements of the
regulation on electric and electronic equipment waste)
Methodology
The WISARD software uses Life
Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology with data collected from
within the UK, France, New-Zealand and also from Ecobilan/Ecobalance
comprehensive data base. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is now recognized
as a tool allowing one to assess the overall environmental performance
of industrial systems by providing a quantitative and scientific
analysis of the entire system rather than of isolated processes
within it. LCA has shown
that the reality behind widely held social perceptions regarding
waste management issues were often more complex than expected.
The software allows users to access a wealth specific data on waste
management activities gathered by local environmental agencies and
Life Cycle Research Program on Waste Management. The software quantifies
the environmental impact of alternative waste management scenarios
- from the extraction of the raw materials to assimilation back
into the environment - allowing preferred solutions to be identified

the Environment Agency of England and Wales a Life Cycle Tool for
waste management: WISARD™
Waste-Integrated Systems Assessment for Recovery and Disposal,
is the first system of its kind in the world to bring together a
waste management database with a powerful and easy to use software.
Its user friendly interface is especially dedicated for use by local
authorities, academia, NGO's and the waste management industry.
